The NHL Scouting Combine: A unique look at future NHL talent

The NHL Scouting Combine is a one-of-a-kind event in the lead-up to the NHL Draft. Each year, more than 100 of the top draft-eligible prospects are brought together for a week of testing, evaluation, and interviews. Unlike tournaments or showcases, there are no on-ice activities. This is about understanding the athlete off the puck. Physical performance, medical assessments, and psychological profiling all play a role. Every movement, test, and conversation is recorded, making the Combine one of the most data-rich moments in the scouting calendar.

During the Combine, NHL has trusted MyVideoAnalyser for years to structure and record each player profile. It is used to capture, analyse, and report key moments from a player's testing sessions. This provides teams with a full-spectrum view: physical capabilities, mental readiness, and tactical understanding.

The Combine is also a crucial setting for interviews. All 32 NHL teams use this opportunity to speak directly with prospects, exploring personality, mindset, and motivation. It’s often in these quiet conversation, off the ice, where character and leadership qualities come into focus.

In short, the NHL Scouting Combine is not about measuring how a player plays today, but how they may develop in the years ahead. As analyst Ryan puts it, “It’s the final opportunity to ask questions, validate impressions, and uncover what truly sets one player apart from another, before stepping into the draft room.” - Buffalo Sabres
